An Operational Guide for Enterprise Data Governance
How to Assign Data Ownership in the Governata Data Catalog
Assigning data ownership is the step that transforms the Data Catalog from a documentation tool into an operational governance system.
Without clearly defined ownership, organizations cannot ensure:
- Data quality
- Regulatory compliance
- Sustainable and responsible data usage
What Does Data Ownership Mean in Governata?
Within Governata, data ownership refers to:
- Responsibility for the accuracy of the data
- Approval of how the data is used
- Decision-making authority when changes or conflicts occur
Data ownership is divided into two primary roles:
- Data Owner: The business owner of the data
- Data Steward: The operational custodian responsible for managing the data
When Should Ownership Be Assigned?
Data ownership should be assigned:
- When creating a new data asset
- When a data asset is automatically discovered by the system
- When the usage or sensitivity of data changes
Failure to assign ownership represents a governance gap.
Step 1 — Access the Data Asset
- Navigate to the Data Catalog module
- Search for the required data asset
- Open the Asset Details page
Step 2 — Open the Ownership & Stewardship Section
Within the asset page:
- Navigate to the Ownership tab
- The fields related to ownership and stewardship will appear
Step 3 — Assign the Data Owner
Select the person or business unit responsible for the data from a business perspective.
Ensure that the Data Owner:
- Understands how the data is used
- Has the authority to make decisions regarding the data
Then save the assignment.
The Data Owner does not necessarily have to be a technical person.
Step 4 — Assign the Data Steward
Select the operational custodian responsible for managing the data asset.
Define their role in:
- Updating the data asset documentation
- Monitoring and maintaining data quality
- Coordinating with technical teams
Then save the assignment.
Step 5 — Review the Governance Impact of Ownership
After ownership is assigned:
- The data asset becomes linked to governance review workflows
- Ownership information supports regulatory compliance processes
- It becomes a clear reference point for any data-related inquiry
Best Practices
- Never leave a data asset without an assigned owner
- Review ownership assignments periodically
- Separate business ownership from operational stewardship
- Document the rationale behind assigning the owner
